SpaceBar
SpaceBar
It's a bar. In spaaace.
We make the best potions in the sector and our space wizard clientele sure loves to drink. Your mission is to explore the asteroids and bring back the raw ingredients for our potions.
- explore the asteroids
- bring back rare materials
- don't explode
Keyboard
WASD: forward, back, turn
SPACE: tractor beam!!!!
R: reset
+/-: zoom
Gameplay
Your new job as a forager wizard starts out easy but quickly ramps up from gathering ice to mining explodium and stealing eggs from the jumping asteroid spiders over in sector 13. Potions require some weird ingredients!
You have very little fuel for propulsion. Fortunately you can move by tethering your tractor beam to asteroids as you pass by. Your beam pulls you along and lets you swing around. It will also pull materials from whatever you're attached to.
Inspiration
This is (will be) a semi-roguelike inspired by Asteroids, Pinball, Spiderman, Noita, all the silly sci-fi books that feature space wizards, and the Pirate Software game jam that got me started with the theme "Shadows and Alchemy".
Works in progress
All of this is implemented but will be improved or changed as needed.
- Core movement mechanics
- Working pretty well - just needs some tweaks and tuning
- Need to add a pinball style launcher mechanic when I implement the spawn point
- Need to do the math for affecting the movement of tethered asteroids instead of relying on a spring
- Procedural world generation
- Generating positions and sizes works well
- Needs to look better: more sprites, particles, spiders, etc
- Need to save modifications to the generated world so we can re-create the modified state later (for saves and multiplayer)
- Mining
- Basic POC is working
- Needs a finite cargo hold (stack blocks in a grid instead of progress bars?)
- Need ability to dump junk
- Need to be able to see what an asteroid has before mining it
- Home base
- The SpaceBar is built around a large asteroid
- This is where you spawn and where you need to return after mining stuff
- Navigation (find stuff and find your way home)
- Visible navigation targets are circled in red
- A pointer near your ship indicates the direction to off-screen nav targets
To do next...
- Targeting: we need a way to designate what we're looking for
- Missions: find and return with ingredients to fill drink orders
- Enemies, hazards, upgrades, etc
